Serbia

The cheapest country in Europe with proper espresso and 4 a.m. last orders.

Serbia is the cheapest, friendliest, and most underrated country in the Balkans. Belgrade is your transport hub — night buses radiate out to Montenegro, Bosnia, Bulgaria and North Macedonia, plus the legendary scenic train to Bar (Montenegro) and a high-speed line to Novi Sad.

Serbia isn't in the EU and uses the dinar (~117 RSD = €1). Cards are accepted in cities but bring some cash for outside Belgrade. The country is the natural overland bridge between Central Europe and the Balkans — every bus from Vienna or Budapest to Athens stops in Belgrade. Two regional gems are worth a day each: Niš (Roman heritage, gateway to Bulgaria) and Novi Sad (the prettier, smaller sister of Belgrade).
