Belgrade (Beograd) is the launchpad for almost every Balkan road trip. Cheap, loud, fun — and the cheapest place in Europe to drink good coffee on a terrace. Use it as a hub for night buses to Montenegro, vans to Sarajevo, or trains to Novi Sad.

May–June and September. Avoid August (40°C and locals leave).

  • · Trains: Belgrade–Novi Sad high-speed (35 min), Belgrade–Bar (Montenegro, scenic 11h).
