Montenegro

The Bay of Kotor: a fjord-shaped UNESCO bay you can sail, swim and Old Town-walk in one day.

Montenegro is small, dramatic, and unusually well-connected by bus. The Bay of Kotor is the highlight; Budva is the party hub; Lovćen and Durmitor are world-class hiking. The country uses the Euro despite not being in the EU.

Montenegro is best paired with either Dubrovnik to the north (90-min bus) or Tirana to the south (5h). Direct overnight buses from Belgrade put you in Kotor or Budva by sunrise. The famous Belgrade–Bar train route ends in Montenegro: 11 hours of mountain scenery, €25, sleeper carriages available. The northern mountains (Durmitor National Park, Tara River Canyon) need a rental car or organised tour — buses there are infrequent.

Montenegro travel — FAQ

Is Montenegro in the EU?+

No, but it uses the Euro unilaterally. Border checks apply.

How do I get from Dubrovnik to Kotor?+

Direct bus, 2 to 2.5 hours including the border, from €18. Runs 5–6 times daily in summer.

Is Kotor better than Dubrovnik?+

Smaller, cheaper, less crowded, with a more dramatic setting. Pair them — they're only 90 minutes apart.
