Albania

Europe's best-value Mediterranean coast and a capital that became cool five years ago.

Albania is the Balkans' most surprising country — Tirana is now genuinely fun, the Riviera coast (Himarë, Dhërmi, Ksamil) rivals Greece at half the price, and ferries to Corfu run daily from Saranda. The road network has improved hugely; minibuses (furgon) are the practical option for shorter trips.

Almost no one regrets going to Albania, and almost everyone wishes they had stayed longer. The catch is that public transport is informal — furgons leave when full, not on a timetable. For longer rides between Tirana, Saranda, Shkodër and Kotor (Montenegro), the formal intercity coach services on Bookaway are far easier. Gjirokastër (UNESCO) is the best stopover between Tirana and Saranda. Combine with Corfu: 30-minute daily ferry from Saranda.
