Zagreb to Plitvice Lakes National Park is Croatia's single most-booked day trip. The park is 135 km south of Zagreb and direct buses leave Zagreb Bus Station hourly between 06:30 and 16:30, dropping at one of the two park entrances. The drive is 2 hours each way; allow at least 5–6 hours inside the park to walk the main lakes circuits.
Plitvice is a UNESCO-listed series of 16 turquoise terraced lakes and waterfalls connected by wooden boardwalks. In July and August it can receive 15,000 visitors a day, and timed-entry tickets are required — you have to book them online, in advance, for a specific entry hour, or you'll be turned away at the gate. Independent travellers can do it as a day trip from Zagreb (07:00 out, 16:00 back) but staying one night in a nearby pension lets you start at 07:30 when the boardwalks are empty and lit by morning sun — completely worth it. Arrival in Plitvice Lakes
Buses stop at Entrance 1 (lower lakes) or Entrance 2 (upper lakes — closer to most accommodations). The two entrances are 2.5 km apart along the road; a free shuttle inside the park connects them. The cycle of upper lakes → boat → lower lakes → train back is the classic 5-hour route.
When to go
April–May (waterfalls at peak flow), September–October (autumn colour, no crowds) are best. July–August are crowded but the boardwalks are open in full. Winter (Nov–March) — magical with snow and frozen lakes, but most boats and shuttles don't operate.
