Sarajevo → Mostar: the day trip that's worth two days
Bridge jumpers, Ottoman bazaars, Kravica waterfalls — and why you should not rush back the same day.
130 km through the Neretva canyon. 2.5h by bus or train — one of Europe's prettiest rides.
Currency
Bosnia uses the convertible mark (BAM, ~1.95 BAM = €1). Euros widely accepted in Mostar tourist spots but you'll get bad change. Withdraw BAM from a bank ATM.
Language
Bosnian. English is fine in Mostar's tourist core; less so outside.
Best time
April–June and September–October. July/August in Mostar regularly hits 38°C.

Bus or train?
The train is the scenic one — the line runs along the Neretva river through tunnels and gorges.
- Bus (€8–€12, 2.5h, ~10 daily): frequent, cheap, comfortable.
- Train (€10–€14, 2h, 2 daily): more scenic, slightly faster, no Wi-Fi.
- Day-trip with stops (€35–€55): organized tours add Konjic, Pocitelj and Kravica waterfalls.
Stari Most & the divers
The Old Bridge was destroyed in 1993 and rebuilt with original techniques in 2004. Local divers (Mostari) jump 24 m into the freezing Neretva — they only jump when enough tips have been collected (€25–€30 in the box).
Stay overnight if you can
Mostar empties after the day-trippers leave at 17:00. The Old Bazaar lit up at night, with a glass of local Žilavka wine, is the version you came to see.

Watch out for
- !The bridge is slippery polished marble — leather soles will betray you.
- !Mosques charge €2–€4 entry. Cover shoulders & knees; women get a scarf at the door.
- !There's still ruined buildings and a 'Don't Forget' stone near the bridge — be respectful, it's a memorial.
