Crossing Balkan borders in 2026: passports, visas, vignettes
Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, BiH, North Macedonia, Albania — every entry rule and surprise fee, in one page.
Six countries, two currencies, one Schengen border, and one toll vignette you probably don't need.
Currency
EUR: Croatia, Montenegro, Kosovo. RSD: Serbia. BAM: Bosnia. MKD: North Macedonia. ALL: Albania. Most coastal places accept euros — just expect ugly change.
Language
Local languages + English throughout the tourist trail. Cyrillic appears in Serbia, Bosnia (Republika Srpska), North Macedonia.
Best time
Borders are smoothest April–June. July/August weekend mornings see 1–3h waits at coastal crossings.
Who needs a visa
EU, UK, US, CA, AU, NZ, JP passports — 90 days visa-free in every Balkan country. Always double-check before traveling.
- Croatia is in Schengen — your 90/180 Schengen clock applies here.
- Serbia, BiH, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo are NOT in Schengen — separate 90-day allowances.
- Kosovo: if you enter via Serbia, Serbia considers it 'internal'. Exit through Serbia again to avoid an illegal-entry flag.
Driving across borders
Rental cars need a green card extension for most non-EU Balkan countries. Confirm in writing before pickup.
- Vignettes required: Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Austria. Not required: Serbia, Croatia, BiH, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania (these use toll booths).
- Headlights ON in daytime: Serbia, BiH, Montenegro, North Macedonia.
- Winter tires: mandatory Nov–Apr in Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro (above 500 m).
Watch out for
- !Bosnia has a 'green card' on your insurance? Check it lists 'BIH'. If not, buy local border insurance — €15–€30.
- !Some carriers (especially budget vans) skip border insurance. Ask before booking.
- !Croatia → Bosnia → Croatia in the same trip uses TWO of your Schengen days each time — plan around it.
