Pick your boat (or plane)

Three legitimate ways across.

  • Slow ferry (€40–€60, 7–8h): cabins available, very cheap if you sleep aboard overnight.
  • Fast catamaran (€60–€110, 4.5–5.5h): SeaJets, Blue Star — choppy in wind, sea-sick pills help.
  • Flight (€50–€180, 45 min): Aegean and Sky Express daily from ATH. Often cheaper than the fast ferry.

Arriving in Santorini

Ferries dock at Athinios port — there's NO town there, just a chaotic lineup of buses and ATV rentals. Pre-book a transfer (€20–€30) or grab the bus to Fira (€2.50).

Getting around the island

Public buses link Fira to every village (€1.80–€2.50). ATVs and scooters are everywhere — €25–€40/day. Drive carefully: the road to Oia gets dangerous at sunset.

What to see

  • Oia sunset
Famous for a reason — arrive 90 min early or watch from Fira instead
  • Akrotiri
Bronze Age city buried in ash, way less crowded than Knossos
  • Red Beach & Vlychada
Skip Perissa, the south beaches are better
  • Caldera hike
Fira → Oia along the cliff, 3–4h, start at 07:00 in summer

Where to eat

  • To Psaraki, Vlychada
Fresh fish on the marina, locals' pick
  • Lucky's Souvlakis, Fira
    €3 souvlaki — the best post-sunset meal
  • Metaxi Mas, Exo Gonia
    Reservation required, worth the taxi

Watch out for

  • !Oia donkey rides are cruel — climb the steps on foot or take the cable car.
  • !Cliffside hotels charge €300+ in season. Stay in Pyrgos or Megalochori for €80 and bus in.
  • !Ferry tickets are non-refundable — check the wind forecast before booking the catamaran.
